How to change your visa status in Japan

If for some reasons, like changing jobs for example- you might be instructed to change the status of your visa. This could occur specifically if you're switching to a different field or area of work. For example, if you are an English teacher teaching in an Eikaiwa company, but you changed your job to become an ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) teaching in a public school (this pertains to government institutions) then by law you are required to change your visa status from Engineer/Specialist inHumanities/International Services into Instructor visa.

Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services covers a wide scope of job positions. As it could be confusing at times, make sure to check your Visa application form and carefully input the appropriate details in order to avoid misunderstanding that may affect the approval of your Japanese work visa.

Generally, the applicant themselves must go to the Immigration Bureau to submit the application documents. Ensure that they are complete and concise (once again). This entails standing in a long line, getting a priority number and waiting for your number to be called by an Immigration Officer who will examine your documents. Once everything is verified and checked you will be given a receipt that confirms your documents are being processed. You also have to submit your residence card (zairyuu - 在在留カード) and passport so you won't be having them for the time being. So make sure you have your application receipt with you all the time for when authorities check your identifications, the application receipt will serve as your ID for the time being.

So what do you need in case you change the status of your visa?

Basically, it's the same as when applying for a new visa. The application form you have to submit is similar. You can refer to the following link also check out the list I have compiled for general reference. The list however is incomplete; if you are submitting your documents on your own, you should include the business registration certificate of your company, company's annual financial statement and company's detailed information such as brochures, leaflets, guidebooks etc. that may prove the validity of the company.

Important points to remember:

1. Make sure that you got the spelling of your name in katakana correctly.

2. Avoid erasures or mistakes in your application form.

3. Fill out the form accurately and make sure that your penmanship is easily readable/ understandable.

4. Refer to paper documents (write manually)

For all visa-related processing, the timeline usually takes about a month for approval (upon the date of submission) This visa processing application can also be processed by a third party, an agent or a company officer from your place of employment. It depends on your agreement just make sure that all required documents are present and submitted accordingly.
