How to go to a (Japanese) hospital and see a doctor

For your first visit

Please be sure to bring your public insurance card at your first visit otherwise you have to pay all the medical cost by yourself without medical insurance. Even if you are a policy holder, in case you don't have the actual card with you then you still have to pay the whole cost. You may also be asked to show your ID (residence card) at the reception desk.

Step 1: Reception

Submit your insurance card.Write your symptoas on the medical questionnaire you receive. After turning in your medical questionnaire, sit in the waiting room until your name is called. If you received a number at the reception desk, wait until that number is called. Please refrain from making phone calls, speaking in a loud voice, or eating in the waiting room.

Step 2: Consultation

When your name or number is called, enter the examination room and the doctor will examine you. Some examinations will be done if necessary.

Step 3: After consultation

Make an appointment for the return visit if necessary. When your examination is complete, return to the waiting room and wait for your bill.

Step 4: Cashier

When your name or number is called, pay the bill for your examination. If you've been prescribed medicine, you'll receive the prescription at this step.

Step 4: Pharmacy

Go to a pharmacy that handles prescriptions and purchase your medicine. Some cases, you can also purchase it inside the hospital facility .

For your return visit

Show your patient ID card and wait your turn.If you 're visiting the hospital for the first time that month, you'll also be required to show your insurance card once more (This is so the hospital can confirm there have been no changes to your insurance information since the previous visit.) DO NOT forget your patient ID card, or you may not have consultation without it.)
